Marilyn Monroe is a favorite vintage fashion icon who’s elegance, femininity, and bubbly charisma not only captivated audiences in her day, but who continues to do so decades later.

Although she most famous for her sexy and glamorous persona from Old Hollywood wearing fitted designer dresses, diamonds, and furs, behind the scenes she appeared to favor simple, yet chic styles.

A wardrobe favorite? A simple sweater.

Today we will start off discussing the popularity of the sweater as a wardrobe staple in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, and then we’ll explore Marilyn Monroe’s life through thirty-two of her most iconic sweater looks, including rare Marilyn Monroe photos.

Vintage Sweaters: 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s

Before walking through Marilyn Monroe’s life through photos, we first need to understand the sweater in the context of her era.

The sweater was a favorite wardrobe stable for women in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, with the looks ranging from practical, to sporty, to sophisticated, to sexy.

Not only was there a gorgeous variety of retro sweaters styles, from sleeveless, to short-sleeved, to long sleeved styles, but the vintage patterns were also to die-for, ranging from patterned colorful, to pastels, to bright happy colors.

Models and actresses sported these oh so sexy looks in movies and on pin-up posters, paired with short shorts or swimsuits.

1940s bullet bras (you know those popular pointy looking ones–where women’s boobs look triangular) sure did create a fabulous foundation for the tight sweater.

No wonder the sweater rose to stardom as a favorite Old Hollywood Glamour looks.

Also, in patriotic era of World War II, they also were a must-have for women in the forces.

Don’t you just love these adorable pictures of the incredibly young Marilyn Monroe in 1945?

At 19 years old, the aspiring model Norma Jeane (prior to her new name Marilyn Monroe) met and fell in love with a young Hungarian photographer André de Dienes.

Marilyn Monroe had recently separated from her husband James Dougherty, a police officer, whom she had married at the young age of 16.

She was ready for a new life and told the young photographer that she dreamed of becoming an actress.

The photographer, falling for her immediately, suggested a roadtrip consisting of photoshoots set in the natural landscapes.

He agreed to pay her a flat fee of $200.

Unbeknownst to the two of them, this would help launch both Marilyn Monroe’s career first as model (before an actress) and the photographer’s career too.

A number of the first Marilyn Monroe sweater looks of the innocent looking 19-year old are from this roadtrip.

Although the photographer went on to make far more money than these on the famous pics, yet he never gave her a percentage of the sales.

Secrets to this captivating Marilyn Monroe sweater look?

Layer a fitted pastel pink sweater over a white button-up, and pair it with plaid slacks.

Notice the adorable retro touches in this outfit…The matching pink hair bow and nipped in waist, and of course the vintage waves and simple classic make-up.

This retro trouser style is so ladylike, flattering, and comfortable.

Marilyn Monroe Sweater Pattern: Marilyn Monroe Sweater Style #18 Glamour Girl Next Door

We totally adore this casual, and yet insanely feminine vintage style, that would turn just as many heads today, as it did in 1953.

Marilyn Monroe pairs cropped fitted white sweater with vintage blue jeans, and simple wedge sandals.

Her thick brown belt emphasizes her feminine figure.

Notice a few key style elements that really make this outfit pop.

First her white patterned sweater is oh so vintage and girlie–with both the cut (including puff sleeves!) and the weave pattern sweater.

Also, her blue jeans are the looser 1950s style that is pleated at the waist and thus is both comfy and shows off the curves.

Marilyn Monroe Sweater Style #1950’s Denim

Marilyn Monroe absolutely sizzles both on set and onscreen in 1952 when starring in the drama film noir Clash by Night as the independent thinking small-town girl who is dreaming of life beyond her small town.

Marilyn Monroe was one of the first starlets in Old Hollywood in the 1950s who displayed how intriguing blue jeans could be.

Interestingly the 1950s was first decade in which teenager’s fashion was different from Mom and Pop.

Marilyn Monroe’s jeans looks also helped cement her status one of America’s biggest symbols of youth culture — an influence that has continued in the decades following.

To pull off this sexy and rebellious denim look, Marilyn Monroe paired a white cropped sweater top with classic 1950s straight-cut blue jeans, and simple sneakers.

Sexy tomboy meets your girl-next-door look in a refreshing natural and understated femininity.

Her straightforward self-possessed cutting edge “cool” style that Marilyn displayed so often offscreen highlights an innate sense of style vs a love of high fashion.

More the down-to-earth and real girl than the glitzy Old Hollywood Glamour image with diamonds, fur, and pink that her agent and Old Hollywood wanted to make her into.

Big thanks to Marilyn Monroe for her role in bringing jeans to the twenty century as both a classic piece and one with a delightful history.

Another reason she was so beloved on and off screen was her down-to-earth attitude, and innate sweetness.

John Huston, Marilyn Monroe’s director in her later film (Asphalt Jungle) said of her she’s a “…Good hearted girl – a great heart she had. I think the Bogarts and the Monroes were new in their own generation – they weren’t like anybody else, and people are never replaced.” But “thanks to this medium,” he continued, “they’ll be there for a long time.”

Marilyn Monroe Sweater Style #20 Steamy Sports Jersey

We adore this sporty chic outfit that Marilyn Monroe wore to show her pride and support at a Georgia Tech game in 1952.

The pairing of this outfit is so delightfully unexpected–a v-neck college sweatshirt, paired with a criss-cross pencil skirt and strapped white heeled sandals.

Jewelry optional, but your team’s flag or sash is highly recommended!

The signed photograph says, “Best Wishes Coach Dodd.”

The “experts” consensus is that this was a real message and autograph from Marilyn–not one of the hundreds of fakes!

Marilyn Monroe Sweater Pants: Marilyn Monroe Sweater Style #21 Blonde Bombshell

This Marilyn Monroe sweater outfit absolutely sizzles Old Hollywood Glamour!

This is one of the iconic outfits that Marilyn Monroe wears in the slapstick 1953 Gentlemen Prefer Blondes film as she tries to land herself a millionaire.

”Don’t you know that a man being rich is like a girl being pretty? You wouldn’t marry a girl just because she’s pretty, but my goodness, doesn’t it help?” — Marilyn Monroe as Lorelei Lee.

Billy Travilla designed Marilyn Monroe’s glitzy and incredibly glamorous costumes for this movie and eight of her films, helping define her glam persona.

Yee Haw…. Giddy up Cowboy!

(Doesn’t this look like a western set in Colorado where she’s waiting for man to ride in any minute?)

Marilyn Monroe once again sizzles in this simple (and oh so practical!) sweater outfit. How can a pair of blue jeans ooze so much sex appeal?

Well, glad you asked. Let’s dissect the vintage style secrets.

Marilyn Monroe pairs a figure flattering white long sleeved white sweater with classic straight leg blue jeans.

She tucks in her top and cinches the waist with a wide black belt.

Lastly, she slips on a pair of comfortable and colorful wedge sandals.

Toss those platinum waves into pin-curls the night before and add a touch of classic retro make-up–emphasize the lips and eyes–and voilà Hello Gorgeous!

Marilyn Monroe Sweater Pants: Marilyn Monroe Sweater Style #23 Chic Chill Time

Marilyn Monroe absolutely glows in the candid behind the scenes shot without makeup.

Fun fact!

A well loved (and very worn out version) of this his camel colored cardigan sweater was found among the the pieces of Marilyn Monroe’s estate.

Even when choosing a cozy and snug “kick up your feet” kinda style, Marilyn Monroe always makes it looks so feminine and pretty.

To channel this Marilyn Monroe look, nab a comfy and oversized cardigan with statement buttons, stuff those tired feet in a bubble bath and enjoy a cup of steaming peppermint tea.

Marilyn Monroe Sweater Style #24 Comfy Athleisure

It’s cozy sweater time for Marilyn Monroe as she bundles up for a scenic bike ride in the UK circa 1956!

Again notice how casual Marilyn Monroe is dressed in this candid shot–it is quite the contrast to her hyper glitz on fashion persona on screen.

Years later in the exhibition catalog after her death, Stefania Ricci wrote, “She paid little attention to the relentless changes in fashion, and loved simplicity to the point that her clothing was meant just to be worn and not shown off, clothing that didn’t include extras–not even jewelry, which she would give away to her friends.”

For example when the Emperor Hirohito gifted Marilyn Monroe a string of precious pearls on her honeymoon in Japan with her second hubby (baseball player, Joe DiMaggio), Marilyn Monroe would later turn around and gift these to a friend’s daughter after she expressed admiration for them.

Don’t forget the good posture and tousled waves, and you’ll be on point to recreate this fun and super casual late 1950s pinup style.

Marilyn Monroe Sweater Style #29 Sexy 60s Vintage Mod

marilyn monroe sweater style in the 1960s

Burnt orange and the glorious mod vintage 1960s fashion comes in full swing with this Marilyn Monroe outfit!

As the old saying goes, ”Orange is the color of truth.”

Perhaps it is insightful that this was the color selected by Marilyn Monroe to wear on this last photoshoot.

Notice how she pairs her deep orange knit sweater with matching fitted pants and pointy nude pumps.

To keep it both casual and comfy, she opted to go braless for these shots. And no jewelry.

Notice also her iconic make-up–dramatic dark eyes and red lipsticks.

In 1962 Cosmopolitan assigned the photographer, George Barris, to photograph Marilyn Monroe around Los Angeles.

These were to be published with an upcoming article.

Rumor has it that Marilyn Monroe wasn’t too tickled about the idea of another sitting, but finally agreed to do it at her house and a few other spots around the city.

The 150 pictures that George Barris took over the upcoming weeks in her home, at the beach, and in a few Hollywood Hills locations would end up being her final photoshoot, before her mysterious death that occurred a few weeks later.

These pictures memorialize someone very much alive, down to earth, and comfortably casual.

We love these pics from her George Barris photoshoot in Beverly Hills and overlooking Hollywood.

For this chic 60’s style, Marilyn Monroe pairs a purple sweater shirt with white pants, and, once again — shoes are optional.

When she does wear them them it’s her strapped nude pointy pumps.

You can almost feel the mist in the cool air.

Once again Marilyn Monroe’s outfit choice in her last photoshoot, which came at a time in her life when she didn’t have as much ‘to prove’, perhaps gives a glimpse into her real style favorites.

Marilyn Monroe’s sweater of choice is a patterned Cowichan sweater. (These sweaters are different from the modern Scottish sweaters, since the authentic ones are hand-knit from a thick yarn. Ooohh, so cozy!)

Can you imagine a more pleasant outfit to throw on for a cool evening when at the beach, or when curling up in front of the fireplace?!

P.S. We included one bikini pic in case you were dying, as much as we were, to know what she was wearing under that sweater!
