This is one of the iconic outfits that Marilyn Monroe wears in the slapstick 1953 Gentlemen Prefer Blondes film as she tries to land herself a millionaire.
”Don’t you know that a man being rich is like a girl being pretty? You wouldn’t marry a girl just because she’s pretty, but my goodness, doesn’t it help?” — Marilyn Monroe as Lorelei Lee.
Billy Travilla designed Marilyn Monroe’s glitzy and incredibly glamorous costumes for this movie and eight of her films, helping define her glam persona.

Again notice how casual Marilyn Monroe is dressed in this candid shot–it is quite the contrast to her hyper glitz on fashion persona on screen.
Years later in the exhibition catalog after her death, Stefania Ricci wrote, “She paid little attention to the relentless changes in fashion, and loved simplicity to the point that her clothing was meant just to be worn and not shown off, clothing that didn’t include extras–not even jewelry, which she would give away to her friends.”
For example when the Emperor Hirohito gifted Marilyn Monroe a string of precious pearls on her honeymoon in Japan with her second hubby (baseball player, Joe DiMaggio), Marilyn Monroe would later turn around and gift these to a friend’s daughter after she expressed admiration for them.

Burnt orange and the glorious mod vintage 1960s fashion comes in full swing with this Marilyn Monroe outfit!

Perhaps it is insightful that this was the color selected by Marilyn Monroe to wear on this last photoshoot.

To keep it both casual and comfy, she opted to go braless for these shots. And no jewelry.
Notice also her iconic make-up–dramatic dark eyes and red lipsticks.
In 1962 Cosmopolitan assigned the photographer, George Barris, to photograph Marilyn Monroe around Los Angeles.
These were to be published with an upcoming article.
Rumor has it that Marilyn Monroe wasn’t too tickled about the idea of another sitting, but finally agreed to do it at her house and a few other spots around the city.
The 150 pictures that George Barris took over the upcoming weeks in her home, at the beach, and in a few Hollywood Hills locations would end up being her final photoshoot, before her mysterious death that occurred a few weeks later.
These pictures memorialize someone very much alive, down to earth, and comfortably casual.

Marilyn Monroe’s sweater of choice is a patterned Cowichan sweater. (These sweaters are different from the modern Scottish sweaters, since the authentic ones are hand-knit from a thick yarn. Ooohh, so cozy!)
