We first meet Grace Kelly’s character Catherine after she helped nurse Rian (Stewart Granger) back to health.
He had stumbled upon a lost emerald mine in the mountains, but on the way back had been attacked by bandits shot him, stole his horse, and left him for dead.
Luckily, the local priest came along and brought him back to the mission.
Grace Kelly’s style is a simple yellow blouse, with a tan skirt, cinched in at the waist with a brown belt.
You’ll see this formula repeated for most of Grace Kelly’s outfits in the film, with just the colors and textures of the pieces varying slightly.

Rian (Stewart Granger) leaves and brings back his business partner Vic (Paul Douglas) who he’s convinced to work on the emerald mine with him.
Catherine comes to meet the boat.
Grace Kelly’s style here is similar to her previous outfit, only the colors have changed.
She wears a white blouse tucked into a brown skirt with a black belt around the waist.
This time she also completes the outfit with a hat.

Catherine throws a dinner party at the coffee plantation that she and her brother own.
She is dedicated to coffee plantation as it was their father’s and his father’s before that.
Her brother, on the other hand, wants a way out and is tired of the constant struggle.
Grace Kelly’s character Catherine wears one of her trademark 1950s style dresses, with a fitted top and full skirt as they watch musicians after dinner.
Later she shows Rian (Stewart Granger) around the plantation.
She mentions that the river next to the plantation used to run a different course, something that will be important later on in the movie.

By this time Grace Kelly’s character Catherine and Rian (Stewart Granger) are an item.
During the week, Rian and Vic are busy with their men in the mine, digging as they attempt to find emeralds.
On the weekends, they come down and spend time at Catherine’s plantation.
For one of their evenings together, Grace Kelly’s character Catherine wears a blue skirt, topped with a brown blouse that has white ruffles.

Another weekend, another dinner together.
This dinner however had a bit more excitement than planned.
A bandit comes in and threatens Rian and Catherine trying to strike a deal for whatever emeralds are found in the mine.
Rian doesn’t agree and the bandit threatens that he’ll know as soon as emeralds are found and that he’ll be back. He wants Rian left alive for now so that he can find the emeralds.
Grace Kelly’s character Catherine wears a 1950s style negligee as she comes out onto the terrace after not being able to sleep.

After the critical night at dinner, Catherine and Rian’s relationship turns south real quick.
Frustrated with the lack of progress at the mine, Rian (Stewart Granger) decides he needs more money, men, and equipment to find the emeralds.
Catherine’s brother, anxious for a chance to escape the plantation, offers up their savings and the plantation’s employees for a cut in on the mine.
Catherine rides up to the mine and tries to reason with her brother and Rian.
Complicating matters further is a whole coffee crop that is ready to be harvested.
Grace Kelly wears a blue blouse and pants, complete with a vest and riding gloves for her ride up to the emerald mine. Not your typical Grace Kelly style!

Vic (Paul Douglas) decides that he’d rather be with Catherine then with his partner Rian (Stewart Granger) and goes down to the plantation to help her with the harvest.
As all their men are now occupied with the emeral mine, they have to hire women from the town to help them with the coffee harvest.
For working on the plantation, Grace Kelly’s character Catherine wears a red blouse, tucked into tan slacks, and cinched in at the waist with a brown belt.

Catherine’s brother gets killed by a falling boulder at the emerald mine, further setting Catherine against Rian.

Back to working on the harvest…the river that runs alongside the plantation begins to flood into the coffee plantation.
Vic (Paul Douglas) realizes it’s because of all the water being used at the emerald mine.
He suggests to Catherine that they blow up the part of the mountain that the mine is on in order to turn the river back on it’s original course and save the coffee plantation.

Catherine (Grace Kelly) and Vic (Paul Douglas) ride up to the emerald mine with dynamite to try to redirect the river back on it’s original course away from the coffee plantation.
Grace Kelly’s character Catherine wears her tan high-waisted slacks, this time with an off-white silk blouse. She also initially wears a poncho-like sweater, which she removes after the ride.
At first Rian (Stewart Granger) isn’t too keen on the idea of his blowing up his emerald mine (shocker!) but then he has a change of heart after realizing that Catherine is more important to him.
The bandits also show up, ready for their share of the emeralds.
Rian ends up blowing up the mine and the mountain successfully diverts the river away from the coffee plantation, saving the day.
After the conflict, Catherine (Grace Kelly) and Rian get back together, leaving poor Vic alone again, although he doesn’t seem too upset.
