High Society Film Synopsis
High Society is a 1950’s musical in which Tracy Lord (Grace Kelly) is about to get married to her fiance George (John Lund) when her ex-husband Dexter (Bing Crosby) shows up still in love with her.
To complicate things further, two newspaper reporters are along for the ride, including Mike Conner (Frank Sinatra) who decides he likes Tracy as well.
High Society was a remake of the 1940 movie The Philadelphia Story starring Katherine Hepburn as Tracy Lord, Cary Grant as her ex husband Dexter, and James Stewart as the newspaper reporter.
Grace Kelly High Society Ring
In High Society, Grace Kelly wears her engagement ring from her real-life fiance Prince Rainier, which is supposed to be from Tracy’s fiance George in the movie.
Apparently he didn’t like that she would be wearing a fake ring in the movie so he bought her a second engagement ring which you can catch glimpses of throughout the movie. (It’s hard to miss!)

Her mother tells her that there will be two reporters at the wedding, another fact that Tracy isn’t happy about.

Grace Kelly makes a dramatic appearance wearing a blue dress and acting like a featherbrain as part of her act.
To add drama to the morning, Tracy pretends that her Uncle is her father since her father had left the family some time earlier and she doesn’t want the reporters to know.
Of course, a few minutes later her actual father arrives and then she has to pretend that her father is now her Uncle.
Her ex-husband Dexter (Bing Crosby) is only too happy to hang out play along with the drama.

When “The Philadelphia Story”, with its various sharp, crackling, verbal exchanges…excellent performances by three acting icons…and depthful storyline was presented, I’m certain that most viewers had this thought: no other—or better—presentation of the celebrated Phillip Barry play is possible. This version, figuratively, is cast in entertainment granite.
Boxing fans who saw Jack Dempsey at his tigerish, tornadic, destructive best likewise believed that he was his sport’s ultimate paragon. But then came Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Cassius Clay, Sugar Ray Robinson, and Roberto Duran.
The subsequent arrivals did nothing to diminish the original star. They just found their own orbits around it.
As well, by all standards, “The Philadelphia Story” remains a classic. But 15 years later, its musical remake, “High Society,”—with its unique merits—stands not slightly arear of the predecessor, but beside it.
With “The Philadelphia Story” in black and white, and “High Society” in color, an obvious metaphor can be used to superficially delineate between the presentations. This delineation, of course, is enhanced by Cole Porter’s scintillating, masterful, music/lyrics. Hence, “High Society” has an additional, significant, dimension.
The “Philadelphia” triumverate of Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, and James Stewart gave iconic performances. The “Society” trio of Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, and Grace Kelly—at the apex of her classic, icy beauty—likewise provide a capsule for posterity.
In most cases, the original—regardless of context—stands alone. Here, “High Society” underscores that the assessment need not be an axiom.
